Changes From the First World War
African Americans had more freedoms in this era as a result of the Harlem Renaissance and were treated better than they had been in the war. The massive growth of industry led to an urban majority rather than rural.
Core American Values
Nationalism: Once again, nationalism is taken to the extreme in the form of nativism. Native-born Americans feared all those that were different from them after World War One, which lead to the Sacco and Vanzetti injustices.
Perseverance: Margaret Sanger, a woman who advocated the spread of birth control knowledge and women's control of fertility, successfully founded the American Birth Control League after facing conflict from those who did not agree with her beliefs.
Adaptability: Although the Scopes Trial was a return to fundamentalism in the schools, it opened up Americans eyes to truth in science and the possibility of the Bible not being literally interpenetrated.
